Boutiques, casual and elegant restaurants, surf shops and service businesses dot the Pacific Coast Highway as it makes its way through this one-of-a-kind town. The area's master plan, developed during the 1920's, called for the integration of the civil infrastructure and the environment. The Sierra Avenue bluffs area runs along the ocean and extends from San Elijo on the north to Del Mar River on the south. North County’s premier night spot, the legendary Belly Up Tavern in Solana Beach has had a long history of bringing great live music to the San Diego area.
The highlands of Solana Beach offer great views of the ocean and or back country and are west of the 5 freeway. Originally a major portion of the heights was named "La Colonia". This was changed to Eden Gardens in 1929 by a developer who thought the new name would attract more settlers by evoking an image of the biblical paradise. The area is bisected by Stevens and Nardo.
The Lomas Santa Fe area is east of the 5 freeway. This master planned community has over 2,000 dwelling units, two major shopping centers, an 18-hole championship golf course and country club, and an executive golf course.
The San Elijo Lagoon is a coastal wetland located just north of Solana Beach. The watershed draining into the lagoon encompasses 77 square miles, with two main tributaries; Escondido Creek and La Orilla Creek. Steep bluffs border the lagoon basin and lower reaches of Escondido Creek. This beautiful area area runs along the ocean and estuary of Solana Beach. There are many custom homes and considerable variation in properties in this area.
The school district here is one of the most highly ranked throughout the county, and the recently built public library is state of the art.
